Sophie in Sweden

My phone knew exactly why I couldn't learn Swedish. It had been tracking it for months.

The night after midsommar — the one where mormor asked me a question and I froze, and my boyfriend answered for me again — I couldn't sleep. So I scrolled. Obviously.

Then I opened Screen Time.

3 hours 47 minutes. Per day. Almost all of it TikTok.

That's 26 hours a week. Going nowhere.

The US Foreign Service estimates Swedish takes an English speaker roughly 600 hours to learn.

Meanwhile, I was scrolling an entire Swedish course. Every single week.

I wasn't too busy to learn Swedish. I was too busy scrolling. Read that again — and then go check your own number. I'll wait.

So I did the obvious thing. The thing every productivity guru on the planet tells you to do.

I deleted TikTok. Full discipline mode. Printed a study schedule. New me.

It lasted six days.

That story is on the next page — along with the 20 tiny Swedish words that do half the talking in every conversation. The ones no app teaches first. The ones that got me into the conversation at that table.

No email, no catch. Just part two.

Part two: the six days →
